Basic Operations Reviewer (Professional)
Reviewer's Note: Speed and accuracy are your best friends. Since calculators are prohibited, practice mental math and the long-hand division of decimals daily.
Numerical Ability tests your basic mathematical skills. The foundation of this section is mastering basic operations: Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, and Division, especially when applied to fractions, decimals, and percentages.
Sa madaling salita: Mahalaga ang bilis at kawastuhan. Dahil bawal ang calculator, sanayin ang sarili sa mental math at manu-manong pag-compute.
1. Order of Operations (PEMDAS)
When solving mathematical expressions with multiple operations, always follow the PEMDAS rule:
- Parentheses: Solve everything inside brackets or parentheses first. (Unahin ang nasa loob.)
- Exponents: Solve powers and roots.
- Multiplication and Division: Solve from left to right. (Kung ano ang mauna sa kaliwa.)
- Addition and Subtraction: Solve from left to right. (Kung ano ang mauna sa kaliwa.)
Example:
- Parentheses:
- Multiplication:
- Addition/Subtraction (Left to Right):
2. Fractions
Fractions represent a part of a whole. Mastering how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide them is essential for the exam.
Addition and Subtraction
- Same Denominator: Add/Subtract numerators, keep the denominator.
- Different Denominators: Find the Least Common Denominator (LCD). (Hanapin ang LCD kapag magkaiba ang ilalim.)
Multiplication
- Multiply numerators together and denominators together. (Taas sa taas, baba sa baba.)
Division
- Invert the second fraction (find its reciprocal) and then multiply. (Baliktarin ang pangalawa at i-multiply.)
3. Decimals
Decimals are another way of expressing fractions. Always ensure your decimal points are aligned during addition and subtraction.
- Addition/Subtraction: Align the decimal points vertically. (Pag-tapatin ang mga tuldok.)
- Multiplication: Multiply as whole numbers, then count total decimal places in the factors and place the point in the product.
- Division: Move the decimal point in the divisor to make it a whole number, and move the point in the dividend the same number of places.
4. Percentages
Percentages are ubiquitous in word problems. The basic formula for percentages is: Part = Rate \times Whole
- To convert decimal to percent: Move decimal point two places to the right and add "%". (Ex: )
